In physics, it is known that energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can very much be transferred and stored.  I am the source of the energy, perhaps like the charger to a phone. I am not the ultimate source of energy really, I am powered by things in my life, other people, interests, experiences. My work is the battery I am providing power to and the mind of the viewer is the machine running on the battery- being powered by it through a visual experience.

I create work to channel my positive and negative energies and explore improvisational mark making.  I channel these energies through the movement of my body and gesture on canvas or paper.  Knowing the human brain is incapable of creating randomness I frequently pose myself the questions “How can I mimic the idea of randomness?” or “How can I use this inability to create pattern?” By asking these questions I am exploring mark making to its fullest extent. While making a piece, I am constantly responding to what I have already given myself or what the piece is giving me.  Every new mark is improvised through scraping, building, manipulating and laying down brush marks or pastels- these marks are full body movements. I will frequently allow a piece to create its own self, through the use of drips and accidents.  I will allow my paintings to drip on each other or I will press them together to paint on one another. I am interested in the marks created where I only act as a catalyst to mark making. Using these non-traditional methods allows me to create a mentally stimulating visual experience for a viewer. The color palettes of these pieces are dependent on the energy used to create them.

As an artist, I do not feel it is my duty to tell an individual what is and is not in a piece, but to provide a viewer with images to investigate and interpret.  All people exist in different realities and my truth may be different from the truth of the viewer.  The energies I am channeling, the emotions I am feeling are not necessarily the energies and feelings perceived by the viewer. Through abstraction I give the viewer the ability to interpret the energy how they desire and create their own narratives. Whatever my narrative may or may not be will leave an impression on the viewer if they take a moment to investigate what it may be. I do provide clues, but do not state anything outright. I will however, gladly point you to a path and wish you the best of luck.
